About

A communications professional, photographer and continuous learner with a background in international cooperation, global health, undergraduate research and digital and social media. Born and raised in Kenya, and currently residing on the traditional unceded, unsurrendered territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin People, colonially known as Ottawa. An overview of my work, volunteer roles and recent achievements can be found below:

Experience:

July 2021 to present
Senior communications officer – Canadian Parternship for Women and Children’s Health (CanWaCH)
Preceding roles: Communications officer (July 2021 to February 2022) and communications assistant (March 2022 to March 2023)

Supported the planning, development and execution of the organization’s communications work, including oversight over the organization’s websites, social media channels, and digital campaigns. Engaged in the review, editing, and drafting of communications pieces, including blogs, newsletters and reports. Participated in a range of events, conferences, roundtables and parliamentary receptions relating to issues in international cooperation, global health and gender equality. Continuously assessed and implemented best practices for digital engagement.

August 2023 to present
Youth policy-maker – 2023-2024 OCIC Youth Policy-Makers Hub (YPH)

Worked and engaged with diverse youth from across Ontario on international cooperation and key global issues. Participated in and supported in the delivery of regular discussions relating to Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP) action areas, monthly coffee chats on a variety of policy issues and the YPH’s in-person meeting.

January 2020 to July 2021
Digital communications assistant – Marketing and Communications Office, Mount Allison University

Shaped content strategy, monitored messages, and created posts and stories for the University’s official Instagram account. Crafted copy for digital and print materials. Photographed activities, sights, and events on and off campus. Using content management software, Drupal, aided the University’s efforts to migrate policies, minutes, audits and other web content as part of its website re-design project.

May 2018 to January 2020
Recruitment and Social Media Intern, Department of Admissions & Recruitment, Mount Allison University

While hired as an intern, the responsibility and independence afforded to my position quickly grew during my time in the department. Managing the department’s social media, I introduced a consistent and specialized content schedule, attuned to the department’s needs. This led to a threefold increase in the department’s Instagram following over 18 months, and higher, more sustained engagement across its social media platforms.

May 2018 to July 2021
Campus Ambassador, Department of Admissions & Recruitment, Mount Allison University

Delivered campus tours and engaged with prospective students from across Canada and various countries around the world. One of two students selected to provide a virtual campus tour reaching over 14,000 people:

Research

May 2020 to September 2020
Independent summer researcher – Mount Allison University

Through the case study of Kenya’s Nairobi-Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway, I studied the history, structure, and implications of China’s relationship with Africa. This research culminated in a presentation at the 2020 Mount Allison Summer Undergraduate Research Fair (SURF) and a guest lecture in INLR 4401, Africa in a Global Context.

Journal publication – March 2021:

America’s racial wealth gap represents one of the stark examples of the racial injustice that pervades the country’s past and present. Underpinned by centuries of slavery, de facto and de jure segregation, and asymmetrical laws that were premised on – and set the foundations for – a subordination and exploitation of Black communities, and an overarching institutionalization of white supremacy, the disproportionate wealth enjoyed by white Americans and the barriers to wealth accumulation for Black Americans have led to the assured security of the former and the continued marginalization of the latter. My paper considers the wreckage caused through the lens of hope and anger.
